Lumber Handling and Sorting Automation
Sage engineers lumber handling and sorting automation for long, heavy and variable wood products moving between production, stacking, storage and shipping.

Automate variable wood products with load-aware handling
Lumber and panel products vary in size, surface, moisture, straightness and stack quality. Long products require sufficient support, while rough surfaces and debris influence gripper selection, sensing and maintenance access.
Sage combines gantry robots, FANUC articulated robots, conveyors, scanners, sorting logic and custom tooling to move products through production. Systems can stack, destack, sort, buffer and load material according to product data and process demand.
Application data to define

- Stack quality and downstream handling
What the system can include
Board and panel transfer
Support long or flexible products through machine loading, sorting and stacking operations.
Sorting and routing
Use product data and sensing to direct material to the correct process, storage or pack location.
Pack building
Create controlled stacks or units for downstream processing, storage and shipment.

Frequently asked questions
Can a robotic system handle boards of different sizes?
Yes, within a defined range. Tooling, sensing, recipes and clearances are engineered around the expected product family.
Are gantry robots useful for lumber handling?
Yes. Gantries provide long travel and large rectangular work envelopes for serving multiple stacks, machines or sorting positions.
